Spotlight on Watchung, NJ
On my way home from work, I often have the pleasure of driving through Watchung. This borough was organized in 1926, and named by the Lenni-Lenape Native American Tribe for the word meaning “high hills.” Even though it’s only 6.2 square miles, there is a lot to see and do within the township.
In nice weather, you can stroll around Watchung Lake, and enjoy the sounds of the waterfall cascading over the dam. You can also ride horses at Kafka Farms, or for a more relaxing past time, bring a blanket and some food to the Best Lake Picnic Grove and watch the ducks swim by. If you desire a more cultural outing, visit the Watchung Arts Center where you and your family can enjoy music, art, comedy, and so much more. History buffs will enjoy the Texier House Museum, where you can learn about the history of Watchung and some fascinating facts about Moldenke Castle.
If it’s shopping you’re interested in, then you’re in luck. Watchung is full of stores, big and small. Some are independent, privately owned shops in town, and others are well-known national chains such as those that can be found on Route 22 in the Watchung Square Mall. You can get all your shopping done, whatever your needs, in this one town. From clothing and shoes to furniture and office supplies, it can all be bought here.
In addition to shopping, many services for the home and body are easily obtainable. Looking to add on a patio or replace your walkway, then check out Watchung Masonry on Route 22. They have all the supplies and tools you will need to get the job done. Longing for a massage or wanting to treat yourself to a facial, be sure to visit YY Beauty Spa on Johnston Drive. They know how to pamper your mind and body for a relaxing experience.
If you’re looking for a place to enjoy a good meal with friends and family for an everyday dinner or a special event, there are many options available. Whether you’re in the mood for Mexican, Italian or Japanese, they’re all here. Or head on over to Authentic Cheng-Du on Watchung Avenue for some delicious and exotic Chinese food. There are many dishes to choose from, such as the Hot and Spicy Chicken or the Chinese Eggplant in Garlic Sauce.
Watchung is also a lovely place to call home. Nestled in the Watchung Mountains, it boasts both small homes appropriate for singles and seniors, and large, grand homes that can easily hold a growing family. The public schools are highly-rated, and there is an elementary and middle school located in town. For grades 9 – 12, children attend the Watchung Hills Regional High School and learn alongside kids from neighboring communities. Another alternative is private school, such as Mount Saint Mary Academy, which is a four-year high school for girls. It is run by the Sisters of Mercy and the school is well-known for its exemplary college preparation classes. The campus is in a park-like setting and overlooks other nearby communities.
With so much to do and see in Watchung, you will not be in hurry to leave. However, getting out of town is very easy. You have both Route 78 and Route 22 within close proximately, with New York City being only a 25 minute drive. If you don’t feel like driving, there are also train stations in nearby towns, as well as convenient bus routes.
So if you live in town, enjoy and appreciate all that Watchung has to offer. If you don’t, then it’s worth a trip to discover and explore this wonderful community. You will be glad you did.
